Should I Use White or Kraft for Custom Shipping Boxes?

Choosing between white and kraft paper for custom shipping boxes hinges on balancing your brand image, product characteristics, and budget.

Simply put:

★ White Boxes: Like a blank canvas, they accurately and vividly showcase complex designs, conveying a sophisticated, modern, or high-end brand image.

★ Kraft Paper Boxes: With their natural brown hue, they exude warmth, rustic charm, and an eco-friendly feel, suitable for brands emphasizing nature, craftsmanship, or sustainability.

I. Differences in Printing and Design:

1) White Boxes: Offer the best printing results. High color fidelity allows for accurate rendering of vibrant colors, complex patterns, and photographs. If your brand colors are strong or your packaging design is complex, white boxes are a safer choice.

2) Kraft Paper Boxes: The brown base color can affect ink application. Printed colors tend to be darker and warmer, lacking vibrancy. Therefore, they are better suited for monochrome, two-tone, or dark-toned designs. Important Note: White cannot be printed directly on kraft paper; an additional layer of white ink is required, increasing cost and complexity.

II. Durability and Protection:

1) White Boxes: Equally sturdy and reliable. The strength of a white box is primarily determined by the grade and thickness of its corrugated cardboard, not its color. It offers the same structural integrity and compression resistance as kraft paper boxes.

2) Kraft Paper Boxes: Made from virgin wood pulp with longer fibers, they are generally considered to have higher tensile strength and toughness. However, note that this does not mean all kraft paper boxes are stronger than all white boxes; it depends on the cardboard specifications.

III. Environmental Considerations:

1) White Boxes: Recyclable, but generally less environmentally friendly than kraft paper boxes.

2) Kraft Paper Boxes: A more environmentally friendly choice. Because they are unbleached, they often contain a higher proportion of recycled materials and "appear" greener to consumers.
